19 – 25 November is This Girl Can week and Team Durham are celebrating our own women in sport, with a profile each day of the week of an inspirational woman from Durham University. Get involved in this national initiative, using the hashtag #thisgirlcan
At Durham, we pride ourselves on the variety of sports available to students, from mainstream sports such as football and rugby to lesser known sports including ultimate frisbee and water polo. All these sports and more can be played at beginner level right up to elite athlete level, students are welcome to give these sports a try, whether to play competitively or just to keep fit and have fun.
Roshini Turner- Women’s Rugby
Durham Women’s rugby is currently unbeaten in all teams with some amazing results in the past few weeks. The 1st team has had multiple players named to represent their country. Captain Beth Blacklock has been selected for the England Senior Squad and back player Caitlin Sedgeworth was recently selected for the Scotland Women’s Squad!
Women’s Rugby Co-ordinator Roshini Turner is taking part in our Team Durham This Girl Can campaign highlighting how the rugby team are like one big family and the huge social benefit involved in playing as part of such a cohesive team. Roshini also talked about how at Durham you can get involved in Women’s rugby even if you have never picked up a rugby ball, college teams are for complete beginners and Durham Rugby always welcomes any newcomers of any ability.

Sasha Adamson- Women’s Football
Another women’s team that has been very successful in recent years is the Women’s football team led by club captain and 1st team player Sasha Adamson. The 1st team won the national championship last year for the second year in a row and third time in the last four years.
Sasha talked about how sport has played a huge role in her university experience, not only through physical health benefits but the major social aspect involved with sport, especially team sports.
Team Durham is not just about success in female sport, participation is key at Durham University. This Girl Can week is all about encouraging women to get involved in sport or physical activity of some sort to improve physical and mental health.
Niamh Patterson-Moody- Weightlifting
Niamh Patterson-Moody set up the weightlifting club last year and now has over 45 members. She emphasises that her club is for everyone from complete beginners who just want to get fit and socialise, to those who want to seriously weight lift.
Niamh runs lots of fun, chilled out sessions every week and would happily welcome newcomers, so if you are interested in getting involved then go along to the following sessions at Maiden Castle Sports Centre:

Hannah Knowles – Women’s Cricket, Basketball, Rugby
Hannah is a student who takes full advantage of the broad range of sports available to her at Durham. She is club captain of DU Women’s cricket, plays for DU basketball 2nd team and also plays numerous college sport including rugby. Hannah also coaches, umpires and gets involved with community sports projects around Durham and further afield in Zambia.
We asked Hannah about the benefits of sport and she expressed that sport brings her so much joy because of the social side, sport has helped her build confidence and has always played a huge part of her life.
