Whether you’re a first year tackling those initial university exams, or a finalist pushing for much needed marks, the Easter term is a challenging time to be in Durham. With so much going on, managing stress levels is vital to both your wellbeing and academic success. This is exactly why the Student Wellbeing Team, Student Community Action (SCA), your College, the University Libraries and the Students’ Union are working together to help you to stay relaxed during this busy time.
You’ve probably heard about their fantastic volunteering projects, but this term SCA is placing particular focus on helping you to ‘Stress Less’ while facing the dreaded exams.
From April 29 – May 12 SCA is coordinating a wide variety of events focusing on your wellbeing as part of this year’s Stress Less campaign. The Student Wellbeing Team also offer all kinds of sessions throughout the year, but during the revision and exam period, they focus on exercise, relaxation and fresh air.
There are a host of activities, events and drop in sessions across the University to help you wind down and relax. As tempting as it may be to live in the library for a week or two, taking a break to recharge your batteries is sure to make you more productive in the long run!

Being organised is a good way to keep on top of things and keep things under control, so pick up your free Revision Planner from the Library or the Student’s Union to help plan your work and avoid unnecessary stress!
The Wellbeing Team are offering a number of sessions to help take your mind off exams between busy periods of studying. Activities range from meditation and yoga to pilates, HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), and an outdoor Boot Camp at the Botanic Gardens. With some activities being held in the Bill Bryson library you can ‘Stress Less’ just a short jump from your study space! Even if you’re not a member of an SCA project, there are still opportunities to take a break from studying and help the local community through volunteering. This is also a great way to get some much-needed fresh air, as activities range from a litter pick around the city to conservation work at the Old Durham Gardens. Not sure you’ll be able to take part in any Stress Less activities? Well, not to worry because SCA will be posting ‘micro-volunteering’ ideas every day during Stress Less which you can do yourself in your own time! Check out the SCA Facebook page to keep updated.
Need to brush up on your exam skills? Fortunately, the Academic Skills Programme have organised a range of sessions to help you get exam ready, from Time Management to Exam Strategy Skills. Visit the Academic Skills Programme website to book your place.
On a more serious note, don’t forget that the College welfare teams will also be on hand (as always) to provide support with active listening and signposting to other services, to make sure you are comfortable and confident preparing for exams.
