La Tasca is known for its tapas, a great option if you fancy some variety in your meal or are in a large party. Located on Saddlers Street the restaurant offers a range of Spanish dishes suitable for a variety of dietary requirements including lactose intolerance, coeliac and vegan. Look out for set menus for deals on food, Tastecard holders can also receive a discount on their bill. If you don’t fancy tapas they also offer some great dishes including paella, or if Spanish food isn’t for you they have a range of options on their new menu.
Lebaneat is popular among students. It is conveniently located on the Bailey and have just opened a take-away in Gilesgate. They specialise in Lebanese, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food, so there will hopefully be something for even the fussiest of eaters! As well as offering a range of vegan options, including moussaka, they cater of a range of dietary requirements. Their meat is halal and they have a selection of dairy free and gluten free options too.
Tia’s is a family owned restaurant on Claypath offering a variety of delicious, fresh cooked Mexican and Mediterranean dishes ranging from enchiladas to pizza. As well as having their own gluten free and vegan menus, they can cater for most dietary requirements and the friendly staff are happy to help find something to suit your needs. Happy hour runs fr
om 5pm- 7pm, with deals on food and drinks for even value, plus most of their cocktails are suitable for vegans too so you can partake in sangria with everyone else!
Further afield. There’s also plenty of places around the Durham area that cater for a variety of needs. Zapatista is located in Newcastle near the train station and offer vegan fillings for their burritos. There are also some great options in The Grainger Market, they even put on special deals for vegan week. Eldon Square has just built a new area for restaurants where you’ll find big chains such as Frankie and Benny’s and The Handmade Burger Company that have started to offer vegan and gluten free options.
