During my time as a student, I have independently created two brand new societies at St. John’s College to bridge the gap between sports and societies. Since 2018, I have been running weekly one-hour dance fitness sessions at St John’s, recently with Naomi Wimsett as my co-choreographer. These are always so much fun, a great way to de-stress, meet new people and keep fit! In 2019, I started St John’s College Dance Troupe (SJCDT), a commercial-style dance performance group, who have since performed at numerous college and university-wide events including The Bailey Charity Fashion Show, Castle Ladies’ Night Ball and The BEEC Ball.
With my experience, I was motivated to create a brand-new dance event in Durham to help support local charities. Naomi and I have been working tirelessly with the arrangements over the past few months and we are happy to announce the first Durham Charity Danceathon will be on Sunday 1 March at 11-1:30 pm! The event is based in Leech Hall in St John’s College but students from all Durham University Colleges are very welcome to take part!
“A dance-fit session with a twist! Get your wacky costumes ready for a hilarious two hours of dancing in aid of charity.”
Naomi and I will be teaching easy-to-follow dance routines, in a range of styles, from pop to Latin… not forgetting the kids’ disco classics like the Macarena and Superman! No dance experience is necessary, this is all about having fun and raising money for charity.
Fancy dress is encouraged but is by no means obligatory! It can be as simple as you like, and we’d love to see some DIY attempts. From neon leg warmers with your normal sports gear, a banana costume, to a group of film characters with your friends – anything goes!
Entry to the danceathon is £3 minimum per person on the door, with all entry fees and online donations going to RTProjects, which is wonderful local arts and mental health charity. £3 is no more expensive than many hour-long basic dance-fit sessions, or a cup of coffee, so you’re certainly getting your money’s worth.
Get thinking about your outfit, but most importantly bring lots of energy to the danceathon floor and raise lots of money for this fantastic cause!
