LGBTQIA+

Welcome to the St Mary’s College LGBTQIA+ Association!

At St Mary’s College, we take pride in celebrating the diversity of gender identities and sexual orientations within our community. Our LGBTQIA+ association is dedicated to fostering an environment of inclusivity, visibility, and education, where every individual feels respected and supported. We also run social events of all kinds open to everyone both in College and beyond to help build networks and support within our community. Throughout the year, our exec will be here to support LGBTQIA+ students and organise social events that are inclusive and accessible. For example, in March 2023, we ran an Intercollegiate Pride Formal, which was a great success! This year we are also planning to run a queer family programme within college to anyone interested to help form links between years at Mary’s!

Our mission is to promote awareness and understanding of LGBTQIA+ issues through a variety of engaging activities and events. Whether you’ve been out for years, are just finding your feet with your identity, or an ally, our association welcomes you with open arms; we believe in the power of social events to strengthen bonds, build networks, and create a supportive community both within the college and beyond.

Throughout the year, our dedicated executive committee is committed to organising events that are not only fun but also welcoming to everyone. Keep an eye on our Instagram (@smclgbt) and Facebook for updates on upcoming socials and campaigns. If you’re curious about getting involved, or just want to know more about queer life at Durham, don’t hesitate to reach out. Feel free to message us on Instagram or send us an email at rowan.sutton@durham.ac.uk or jessica.e.banfield@durham.ac.uk. Rowan will be hosting a drop-in session on Tuesday and Sunday during Freshers’ Week – a perfect opportunity to learn more about us, ask any questions and get involved!

There is also a lot to get involved in in the wider Durham LGBTQIA+ scene. The Durham LGBTQIA+ association, Trans association and the Ace alliance all run events and offer support, and the Expression LGBTQIA+ fashion show in June showcases the LGBTQIA+ community here at Durham. Come to one of our drop-ins, or send us a message if you have any questions!

Last year, a Palatinate survey revealed that we are the college with the highest percentage of students who openly identify as LGBTQIA+. It’s a wonderful sign that people feel able to come out and express their identity in our community here at Mary’s.

As the city of Durham unites to celebrate Pride Month each year, we eagerly join in the festivities. It’s a highlight on our society calendar, where students come together, dress up, and actively participate in commemorating this important occasion.

Join us at St Mary’s College LGBTQIA+ Association to be part of a warm, diverse, and supportive community, regardless of your identity, whether you’re questioning, or just a supportive ally. Together, we celebrate our differences, embrace our identities, and promote a more inclusive future!:
