IT Help Guide

This page is designed to provide you with detailed instructions on how to seamlessly connect to the Durham campus WiFi, as well as providing alternatives and troubleshooting steps to resolve any challenges you may encounter when trying to connect.

For the majority of students, connecting to the Durham campus WiFi is no issue, however we understand some students may face difficulty. Sometimes our devices just simply do not want to co-operate with us, it happens to the best of us.

The Durham campus WiFi is called DU Student. This network spans the vast majority of university buildings including:

  • The TLC (Teaching and Learning Centre)
  • The Bill Bryson Library
  • The CLC (Calman Learning Centre)
  • The MCS Building (Maths & Computer Science)
  • The Science site
  • and more…

It is also available in all college buildings in Durham, which includes St Mary’s College.
This should be your go-to network as it very rarely suffers downtime and is very fast. I’ve personally managed to get speeds of 300Mbps+ over WiFi on most days, so speed shouldn’t be an issue.
If it is an issue, get in contact here.

Connecting to ‘DU Student’ WiFi

  1. Navigate to your Connection settings on your device
  2. Navigate to the WiFi section
  3. Locate the network called DU Student (You may need to refresh the list of available networks if it doesn’t show up immediately)
  4. Enter your Durham email address into the username field. The format that you should use is username@durham.ac.uk (e.g. abcd12@durham.ac.uk).
  5. Enter your normal University password into the password field

This should be enough to connect to DU Student.

If you encounter any errors along the way, get in contact with me or the IT service desk here.

Connecting to ‘DU Student’ via a wired connection (Ethernet)

Most, if not all, rooms in St Mary’s contain an ethernet port located near the desk. This is especially useful if you plan on bringing a desktop computer with you to university. Please keep in mind that if you intend on connecting a device in this way, you would need your own ethernet cable compatible with your device.

Once your device is connected using the ethernet cable, the process should be identical to that of connecting to the DU Student WiFi and simply requires you to enter your durham email address and password.

Connecting to eduroam

If all else fails, or you’re waiting to have your issue resolved by the IT service desk, you can try using eduroam.

Eduroam Wi-Fi lets Durham University students, researchers and staff get a secure internet connection on their computers, smartphones or other devices across campus. Eduroam is an international network with hundreds of member institutions. This means you can also access WiFi at other member institutions using your Durham University log in details.

How to Access:

The format that you should use is username@durham.ac.uk (e.g. abcd12@durham.ac.uk) and your normal University password.

Having trouble connecting or not sure what settings to use?

Download the Eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool, available for all major Operating Systems (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, ChromeOS).

The assistant is very small so can easily be downloaded using mobile data / hotspot or a temporary connection to TheCloud@Durham. Remember to disconnect from TheCloud@Durham when you are finished.

Simply click the blue button at the bottom of the Eduroam CAT page and search for University of Durham. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and use the assistant for your device.
